Annual Report 2007

2007 Message from the President of the Board of Trustees

This was a transitional year for the NW Fund for the Environment in several ways. The Board embraced its new policy role and worked with staff to refine our direction within our Program Areas of Aquatic Ecosystems and Growth Management. In November we voted to deepen our commitment to water supply issues and river connectivity in the face of Global Warming and to increase the technical capacity of grantees to meet the challenges of the Shoreline Master Programs updates in counties throughout the state. Another transition has been for our staff, Pam Fujita-Yuhas and Zoë Rothchild, to take on a greater role in the community by participating in more strategy and relationship building that aids our goals.

We are also pleased to announce the establishment of our new Small Grants Program. As a foundation committed to statewide efforts, we became concerned that we were not hearing from many new community groups. We decided to launch this program to encourage and foster the grassroots community. The Small Grants Program will provide grants of up to $5,000 for community and grassroots groups throughout the state who are working in our Program areas, and whose work enhances the greater programmatic goals within our program areas. For more information please see our website.

For the first time in many years we have no departing Board members to bid farewell, but we are delighted to announce the return of Carol Bernthal to our Board beginning in January 2008. Carol is the Superintendent of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and brings a wealth of knowledge on marine issues and extensive experience working in the environmental community and with this board – welcome back!

On behalf of the trustees and staff of the NW Fund, I want to thank all of our grantees for their efforts to protect and conserve the natural resources of Washington State. We are looking forward to working with you in 2008.

David S Mann, President
