The Northwest
Fund for the Environment was founded in
1971 and initially functioned primarily
as a pass-through organization to allow
small groups to receive tax deductible
funding from many grassroots
supporters. In the early eighties,
as tax law evolved, the NW Fund was no
longer needed. It responded by
becoming inactive for several
years. In the mid-eighties, it was
reactivated to evaluate requests and make
grants from an annual donation, becoming
a private foundation. In 1994,
change came again and the NW Fund
received a major bequest forming an
endowment. This enabled the NW Fund
to substantially increase its grantmaking
in the State of Washington. This report,
published annually since 1995, documents
how the NW Fund is meeting the needs of
citizens to protect the natural
environment of Washington State.
This year, again, the report emphasizes
the evolution of the fund's grantmaking
from 1995 through 1998.
